Shelby, North Carolina | September 4–5, 2026
The 2026 Shelby Hamfest brought radio amateurs to the Cleveland County Fairgrounds for the ARRL North Carolina State Convention. Talkpod supported the gathering through its Youth Amateur Program, helping local clubs introduce younger people to practical radio communication.
A first step onto the air
Equipment matters most when it leads to learning. For a new licensee, a handheld radio creates opportunities to practise operating procedures, ask questions, and build confidence with guidance from experienced operators.
The program supports that process by connecting accessible equipment with club mentorship. Hamfests also give families and students a place to explore electronics and meet the people who keep local radio networks active.
Our thanks go to Russell Hayes, KE4GTQ, and the Shelby Amateur Radio Club volunteers for their work.
