[QRT Update]
The PZ5IP team, consisting of Renato PY8WW, Rico PZ5JW, and Klaus DL8TG, began their expedition to Papegaaien Island (SA-092) on March 31st. Unfortunately, due to severe weather conditions, the team had to end their operations early on April 3rd, despite making valuable contacts during their time on the island. The team logged a total of 2,000 QSOs, although they had hoped for more, given the challenging environment.
March 31st – Departure
The team gathered at Rico PZ5JW’s house at 11 PM, then traveled to the Clarapolder port near the Corantyne River estuary. After a 30-minute boat ride, the team landed at their operating site on a small sandy strip on Papegaaien Island. The island is difficult to access, with dense vegetation and varying tidal conditions.
April 1st – Setup and Operations
By 10 AM, all antennas were set up, but the team faced challenges with the receding tide, which delayed their equipment delivery. Operations began, with PY8WW handling a pile-up on 21 MHz SSB, Rico PZ5JW operating on 18 MHz SSB, and Klaus DL8TG running FT8 on 28 MHz.
However, around 10 PM, a strong storm hit, bringing winds and rain. The team had to secure their equipment and tents, pausing operations for safety reasons. The storm lasted through the night.
April 2nd – Recovery and Weather Struggles
By the morning, the team resumed operations, taking advantage of favorable weather windows. The team made good contacts, especially during the greyline period, logging stations from Europe, North America, and Asia. However, the weather quickly worsened again, with strong winds and torrential rain forcing them to stop operations once more.
April 3rd – Expedition Ends
Due to the forecasted severe weather, the team decided to conclude the operation early for safety reasons. Despite the challenges, the team managed to log 2,000 QSOs from Papegaaien Island, marking a successful activation under difficult conditions.
