Key City ARC: A Legacy of Service and Learning

In Abilene, Texas, the Key City Amateur Radio Club (KCARC) is more than just a group of ham radio enthusiasts—it’s a vital part of the local community, dedicated to both the art of amateur radio and to service. Founded in 1977, this ARRL-affiliated club has been operating for over four decades, promoting the hobby of amateur radio, engaging in public service, and fostering learning for newcomers and seasoned operators alike.

A Club With Heart

The Key City ARC is known for its strong community service and is a pillar of emergency communications in the Abilene area. The club is active during ARRL Field Day, a nationwide event where hams from across the country set up stations in emergency-like conditions to test their skills and readiness. It’s more than a competition—it’s about preparing for when real emergencies arise.

Additionally, the club participates in Fox Hunting, a unique and fun activity where members use their radio skills to track hidden transmitters, honing their ability to locate sources of signals in real-life situations.

Teaching and Mentorship

One of the club’s proudest offerings is its educational focus. The Key City ARC provides entry-level license classes as well as General and Technician license classes, making it easier for new operators to get started in the hobby. Whether you're just beginning or looking to upgrade your skills, the club’s experienced members are always ready to mentor, helping newcomers build confidence and knowledge.

The club also holds license test sessions for those looking to obtain or upgrade their amateur radio license.

A Growing Club

With 67 members, including 60 ARRL members, the Key City ARC is a thriving, engaged community. The club meets on the second Monday of each month (except December) at Cobb Park Recreational Center. With the strong leadership of President David D. Andrews WB5VIH and Contact Frank L. Lanza KB5VIH, the club continues to grow and attract individuals passionate about both radio and public service.

The Key City Amateur Radio Club is a great example of how the amateur radio community can blend fun, education, and service. Whether you’re looking to get licensed, test your skills, or give back to your community, this club has something to offer. For more information, visit their website at keycityarc.org.
