Nestled in the rugged beauty of West Texas, the Big Bend Amateur Radio Club (BBARC) has been a cornerstone of communication and service since its founding in 1985. The club’s vast coverage area spans across Brewster, Jeff Davis, Presidio, and Pecos counties, making it a vital lifeline for amateur radio enthusiasts and emergency services in this expansive and remote region.
A Network That Covers 18,000 Square Miles
One of BBARC's crowning achievements is its extensive network of seven 2-meter linked repeaters. These repeaters cover an area of 18,000 square miles, a vast stretch of West Texas that includes rugged terrains, remote deserts, and towering mountains. The club’s system ensures that communications remain clear and reliable across such a large and challenging landscape, making it indispensable for local hams and emergency communications.
The Big Bend Emergency Net held on Sunday evenings on 80m SSB, as well as the Wednesday 2m Net on the club’s repeater system, are both critical resources for connecting members and providing emergency support in times of need.
Service to the Community
The club’s primary mission is not only to provide technical expertise but also to give back to the community. From public service communications to emergency response, BBARC ensures that amateur radio remains a vital tool for public safety. The club members’ involvement in local emergency operations gives them the experience and preparedness to be invaluable during natural disasters or other critical events.
Mentorship and Education
As with many amateur radio clubs, the Big Bend ARC takes pride in fostering the next generation of hams. With offerings such as entry-level license classes, General or higher license classes, and license test sessions, BBARC is committed to making amateur radio accessible to anyone with an interest. Whether you're just starting or looking to upgrade your license, the club is there to guide you every step of the way.
