InterCity Amateur Radio Club: The Pulse of Mansfield's Airwaves

In the heart of Richland County, the InterCity Amateur Radio Club (IARC) stands as a cornerstone for community service, education, and innovation. Known by its call sign W8WE, this family-oriented club has been fostering amateur radio enthusiasm since 1935, blending rich tradition with forward-thinking activities.

A Community Connection

Meeting at the Richland County Fairgrounds Administration Building every first Friday of the month (except July and August), the IARC has become an integral part of Mansfield’s social and technical fabric. Beyond the airwaves, the club’s active involvement in parades, bike-a-thons, and emergency response highlights its commitment to serving the local community. The club’s role in the “Miss Ohio” parade, spanning over 25 years, is just one example of its lasting presence.

Skywarn and ARES: Guardians of the Region

IARC plays a critical role in emergency preparedness. Partnering with Skywarn and the local Emergency Management Agency (EMA), the club supports the Mansfield area with real-time weather updates and disaster communications. The club’s innovative “Angels in the Four-Wheeled Drives” program ensures hospital staff can safely travel during winter storms, underscoring its life-saving impact.

Moreover, both of Mansfield’s hospital networks now boast amateur radio equipment, thanks to IARC’s advocacy. These partnerships extend to routine disaster drills, fortifying the region’s emergency response capabilities.

Building Tomorrow’s Radio Enthusiasts

With a robust focus on education, IARC offers entry-level license classes, quarterly ARRL license testing, and tech nights where members can fine-tune their radios using a spectrum analyzer. Youth outreach remains a priority, with active collaboration with Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts and the promotion of GOTA (Get On The Air) at Field Days and club meetings.

A Vibrant Membership

Boasting a membership of 30 passionate individuals, the IARC thrives under the leadership of President Danny L. Bailey (W8DLB) and a dedicated team, including Secretary Jennifer L. Taylor (N8QKE) and Vice President Duane A. Meadows (K8MDA). Club members bring diverse interests ranging from digital modes and DXing to public service and contesting, ensuring there’s something for everyone.

A Meeting of Minds

IARC’s monthly meetings are as engaging as they are educational. Whether through technical demonstrations, fun presentations, or Skype sessions with prominent speakers, the club strives to keep its members informed and entertained. Its award-winning newsletter and active online presence further enhance communication and camaraderie among members.
