May 13, 2025 — After more than two weeks of intense activity from one of the world’s most remote DXCC entities, ZS8W is now officially QRT as of 1115z today. Operated by Yuris, YL2GM, the DXpedition from Marion Island concluded with over 30,000 QSOs logged — an impressive feat considering the challenges of operating from such an isolated sub-Antarctic location.
Initially scheduled to operate until May 16, Yuris had hinted at extending operations through May 14. However, logistical constraints ahead of the SA Agulhas II’s departure forced an earlier teardown of the station. Final log uploads are expected soon.
Highlights and Timeline
-
April 27: Operations begin shortly after arrival on the island.
-
May 1-5: Yuris goes QRX for antenna work and restarts with significant activity on 80m and 160m.
-
May 9: Nearing 25K QSOs, plans to wind down begin.
-
May 11-12: Final push on CW and FT8; some rare SSB activity logged on 15m.
-
May 13: Unexpected early QRT at 1115z due to packing and ship loading preparations.
Throughout the activation, Yuris focused mainly on FT8 and CW, with limited but memorable SSB appearances. Top Band (160m) operations faced antenna issues but still netted over 100 QSOs. Activity spanned 40-10m, with considerable success on 80m and 30m.
Why It Mattered
Marion Island (ZS8) ranks #11 on Club Log’s Most Wanted DXCC list, and even higher for CW and digital modes. Given the island’s strict access restrictions, this DXpedition was years in the making. Previous attempts by Yuris to activate ZS8 had been denied — until now.
This activation was a rare opportunity for DXers worldwide to log an ATNO (All-Time New One) or fill long-missing bands and modes.
What's Next?
