When floods cut roads, bushfires destroy towers, or storms silence phones, a dedicated team of amateur radio operators stands ready to keep NSW connected. WICEN NSW (Wireless Institute Civil Emergency Network) is the state’s unsung emergency communications backbone—a volunteer force of licensed ham operators who step in when modern infrastructure fails.
The Emergency Communicators You’ve Never Heard Of
Established under the State Emergency and Rescue Management Act 1989, WICEN operates as a specialist unit of the Volunteer Rescue Association (VRA), deploying trained operators at a moment’s notice. Equipped with VHF/UHF repeaters, HF long-range capabilities, and portable maritime stations, they can relay messages from a remote bushfire zone to Sydney—or even across the globe—without relying on internet or mobile networks.
"Whether it’s a natural disaster or a search-and-rescue mission, we provide the link when all else fails," says Nic McLean (VK2KXN), WICEN NSW President.
More Than Emergencies: Keeping Events Safe
Beyond crises, WICEN supports charity runs, car rallies, endurance rides, and remote navigation events—providing vital comms where coverage is nonexistent. "These aren’t just goodwill gestures; they’re critical training for real emergencies," explains Steve Diekman (VK2MCA), the group’s secretary.
State-Wide Reach, Local Impact
With regional teams from the Northern Rivers to the Central Coast, WICEN’s network spans NSW. Their Dural HQ houses a cache of gear, including portable repeaters that can be airlifted into disaster zones.
No Regular Meetings—Just Readiness
Unlike social radio clubs, WICEN doesn’t hold monthly meetups. Instead, members train as needed, ensuring they’re always prepared. The Mid-North Coast team meets monthly in Port Macquarie, but most coordination happens via radio and online alerts.

Licensed amateurs can volunteer, while newcomers can explore training courses (listed at nsw.wicen.org.au). "You don’t just get a hobby—you gain skills that could save lives," says McLean.
