Nestled in the bushland of Kariong, the Central Coast Amateur Radio Club (CCARC) has been the heartbeat of the region's wireless community for over half a century. With more than 80 members and its own dedicated clubhouse, this vibrant group keeps the Central Coast connected through cutting-edge technology and old-school radio camaraderie.
A Clubhouse Packed with Possibilities
Unlike many clubs operating out of borrowed spaces, CCARC boasts its own purpose-built clubrooms at 4 Dandaloo Street, Kariong, complete with a secondary site at Somersby. "Having our own space means we can experiment, innovate, and welcome newcomers anytime," says President Michael VK2HFN.
The club maintains an impressive array of repeaters supporting everything from traditional FM to DMR, D-STAR, and even ATV (amateur television). Their infrastructure spans 6m to 23cm bands, ensuring coverage across the Coast.
Weekly Gatherings and Monthly Showcases
Every Saturday from 10am, the clubrooms buzz with activity as members tinker with gear, troubleshoot antennas, or simply share stories. Formal meetings follow on the first Saturday of each month at 1pm, while the last Saturday features "Show and Tell" sessions – perfect for curious visitors.
"We've had everything from vintage valve radios to satellite communication demos," says Karen VK2AKB, the club's education officer. "It's about sharing knowledge in a fun, relaxed way."
Licensing Made Easy
CCARC runs popular one-day Foundation Licence courses, with Standard and Advanced assessments available. "We've helped everyone from teenagers to retirees get their start in radio," Karen notes. The club's exam pass rates are among NSW's highest.
