The Westmoreland Emergency Amateur Radio Service (WEARS), operating under the call sign WC3PS, has become a critical asset to the local community of Latrobe, Pennsylvania. Since its formation in 2012, WEARS has focused on emergency communications and public service, using the power of amateur radio to support local agencies, community events, and disaster response efforts.
Commitment to Public Service and Emergency Communications
WEARS is dedicated to providing reliable communications during emergencies, offering multi-agency communication support for incidents large and small. Their capabilities include a mobile communications van equipped with VHF/UHF radios, fire department VHF, 800 MHz trunk system radios, and Winlink VHF and HF email. These resources allow WEARS to maintain essential communication links, even when traditional systems fail.
A Strong Presence in the Community
Beyond emergencies, WEARS also plays an active role in local community events. The club provides communication support for a variety of events, such as the Westmoreland County Airshow and run/walk events, ensuring the smooth flow of information for event organizers and participants. The ability to maintain communication in these settings is vital for safety and operational efficiency.
Supporting the Ham Community
WEARS is more than just an emergency response team; it’s also a training hub for amateur radio enthusiasts. The club offers entry-level license classes and license test sessions to help new hams get started. Through its on-the-air bulletins and support for digital modes, including VHF, D-Star, DMR, and Yaesu System Fusion, WEARS keeps its members engaged and connected with the broader amateur radio community.
State-of-the-Art Communication Infrastructure
WEARS maintains a robust VHF Winlink email gateway and a network of repeater stations to support digital modes and voice communication across the region. This infrastructure enhances the club’s ability to serve the community during critical situations and everyday operations alike.
Club Activities and Membership
With 53 members, including a significant number of licensed amateur operators, WEARS is a strong and growing club. The members gather twice a month at the Unity Township Special Ops Center for meetings and planning. Through their collective efforts, WEARS remains a vital part of the region’s emergency response system.
A Vital Resource for Westmoreland County
From its active participation in emergency communications to its invaluable support for community events, the Westmoreland Emergency Amateur Radio Service (WC3PS) plays a pivotal role in keeping its community safe and connected. Whether offering technical support during a disaster or assisting with local events, WEARS ensures that its members are always ready to help when needed most.
