The West Central Ohio Amateur Radio Association (WCOARA) is dedicated to providing robust communication capabilities throughout the West-Central Ohio region, with a particular focus on emergency services and public service. The club, operating under the call sign WC8OH, has been an essential part of the local amateur radio community since its affiliation on May 29th, 2014. It is a prime example of how amateur radio can serve both the public and emergency responders when needed most.
Club Mission and Activities
The WCOARA’s primary objective is to operate and maintain a wide-area radio communications system that can be used by the Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES). This system is vital in emergencies, particularly during communication outages or when traditional channels are unavailable. In addition to serving as a critical communications link to the Ohio Emergency Management Agency (EMA) in Columbus, WCOARA members are committed to providing assistance to Kettering Health Network Hospitals by staffing Emergency Operations Center (EOC) radios during emergency drills and actual events.
The club has expertise in various aspects of amateur radio, including digital modes, VHF/UHF communications, and repeaters. WCOARA also actively supports its members and the community with services such as club newsletters, mentor programs, and on-the-air bulletins that keep members informed and connected.
Meetings and Location
The West Central Ohio Amateur Radio Association hosts its monthly meetings on the third Monday of each month at 7:00 PM via Zoom, making it easy for members to participate from anywhere. This virtual format is particularly advantageous for a club that spans across multiple counties, enabling better attendance and communication among members.
Leadership and Membership
WCOARA is led by President Tyler R. Woodall KD8NVS, who is supported by Vice President Richard R. Edwards WD8SED, Treasurer Charles Brian Kimes W1CBK, Secretary Geoffrey Brozny KD8GRN, and Editor Terence L. Lafferty W8WLW. The club is a growing organization, with 44 members, and 24 of those are ARRL members. The leadership team plays a pivotal role in ensuring that the club’s activities run smoothly and that members have the resources they need for success.
Services and Events
In addition to its core functions, the West Central Ohio Amateur Radio Association offers a Hamfest, a popular event for amateur radio enthusiasts, along with a TVI/RFI Committee to address interference concerns. The club’s mentor program is particularly beneficial for new operators looking to get started in the hobby or those seeking to upgrade their licenses. With an active presence in the community, WCOARA is always looking for new members who are interested in becoming part of this essential service.
