Nestled in the scenic Catskills of Delaware County, New York, the Walton Radio Association (WRA) serves as a vibrant hub for radio enthusiasts across the region. Known for its commitment to advancing radio skills, fostering a sense of community, and serving the public in emergencies, the WRA has been a cornerstone of amateur radio in Western New York since its founding in 1962.
Each month, members gather at the Walton Fire Station on the first Sunday at 1 PM, sharing insights, exchanging ideas, and supporting each other’s development in the diverse fields of amateur radio. Whether members are drawn to DXing, contesting, VHF/UHF communications, or simply the camaraderie of the radio world, the WRA provides an inclusive environment where enthusiasts of all levels are welcome.
The club’s repeater, W2LZ, operates at an impressive elevation of 3,000 feet on a mountain south of Walton, ensuring broad communication coverage. Broadcasting on 147.315 MHz (+) with a tone of 167.9, the repeater supports a weekly net on Wednesday evenings at 7 PM, open to both members and the general public. This weekly net is an opportunity for operators to connect, practice, and keep their skills sharp while fostering connections across the community.
Under the leadership of President Richard R. Kelly (W2RRK), the Walton Radio Association also extends educational opportunities through entry-level and advanced license classes, license test sessions, and one-on-one mentorship for those new to amateur radio. With all 12 of its members actively licensed and affiliated with the ARRL, the club embodies a close-knit, knowledgeable, and dedicated group committed to preserving and growing the practice of amateur radio.
