Triangle Amateur Radio Club: A Legacy of Communication Since 1955

Connecting Communities Through Amateur Radio in Ohio and Beyond

Introduction

Established in January 1955 by founders Otto McVay (W8RZ) and Walter “Red” Kell (W8AXR), the Triangle Amateur Radio Club (TARC) has been a cornerstone of the amateur radio community in Ohio for nearly seven decades. Operating under the call sign K8BLP, the club continues to foster a passion for amateur radio, bringing together enthusiasts from across the region to share knowledge, engage in public service, and promote the advancement of radio technology.

Meetings and Location

TARC holds its meetings on the fourth Tuesday of every month at the North Star Critical Care Training Center. These gatherings provide an opportunity for members and visitors to connect, discuss the latest developments in amateur radio, and plan for upcoming events and activities. The club welcomes anyone with an interest in amateur radio, from seasoned operators to newcomers looking to get involved in this dynamic hobby.

Repeater Operations and Nets

The club operates two repeaters, enhancing communication capabilities for members and the wider amateur radio community:

  • 2-Meter Repeater: 146.70 / 146.10 MHz with a PL tone of 162.2 Hz
  • 70-Centimeter Repeater: 442.175 / 147.175 MHz

An informal net is held every Sunday at 9:00 PM local time on the 2-meter repeater. This net serves as a platform for operators to check in, share updates, and participate in a swap shop segment following the net, where members can exchange equipment and resources. EchoLink check-ins are also welcomed, allowing operators from around the world to join via the internet.

Specialties and Activities

TARC members engage in a variety of amateur radio activities and specialties, including:

  • Contesting: Participating in radio contests to test skills and equipment.
  • Digital Modes: Exploring modern communication methods like PSK31, FT8, and other digital protocols.
  • DXing: Pursuing long-distance communications with operators in other countries.
  • Public Service and Emergency Communications: Providing communication support during local events and emergencies.
  • VHF/UHF Operations: Utilizing very high and ultra-high frequencies for a range of communication purposes.

The Triangle Amateur Radio Club is led by dedicated officers who volunteer their time to ensure the smooth operation of the club:

  • Vice President: Andrew R. Prekup (KE8UNO)
