South Mountain Radio Amateurs: A Hub of Communication and Community in Central Pennsylvania

Nestled in the heart of Carlisle, Pennsylvania, the South Mountain Radio Amateurs (SMRA) have been a cornerstone of the local amateur radio community since their formation in 1982. With a membership that exceeds 100 licensed operators, SMRA has grown into a dynamic hub for all things related to amateur radio, emergency communications, and public service.

Community Engagement and Public Service

One of the core principles of SMRA is its commitment to public service and community engagement. The club plays a crucial role in local emergency communications, supporting a variety of public service events throughout the year. This includes providing communications for biking events in the Michaux Forest and organizing training for emergency communication (EMCOMM) personnel.

But it’s not just about helping during emergencies. SMRA is active throughout the year, bringing members together for a variety of activities. Whether it’s hosting a Ham Radio Saturday Breakfast or running project building sessions, the club fosters a welcoming environment for radio enthusiasts of all levels to come together, learn, and build.

Diverse Programs and Repeater Network

The SMRA is also known for its educational efforts. The club offers license training classes for aspiring amateur radio operators, with sessions held before their regular meetings. These classes help people of all ages and experience levels to pass their Technician, General, and Extra Class exams. Each month, the club organizes a meeting with presentations on various aspects of amateur radio, ensuring that members are always learning and growing.

The club operates an impressive network of four repeaters across multiple frequencies: 145.43 MHz, 146.46 MHz, 443.30 MHz, and 146.685 MHz (DMR). These repeaters are vital for ensuring reliable communications across a wide area and are used regularly during club events, as well as for everyday communication among members.

A Thriving Club with a Strong Future

The South Mountain Radio Amateurs are a prime example of how amateur radio clubs can serve as a vibrant community, bringing together like-minded individuals while making a meaningful impact in local public service and emergency communications. With an active membership of 104, of which 89 are licensed amateur members, and 39 are ARRL members, the club is a thriving organization that is dedicated to advancing the hobby and serving the community.
