9L5A – Sierra Leone DXpedition Update

The 9L5A DXpedition, operating from Sierra Leone, has been actively working the airwaves, with updates about their progress and operational challenges.

Recent Updates

  • Live Streaming and Log Updates (Dec 1, 2024):

    • Live Streaming: The team has started using Live Streaming for their log, despite some initial challenges with the 4G internet connection at their hotel. There was a brief issue with FT8 not appearing correctly on the stream, but the team has resolved it.
    • FT8 Data Mode: Due to an interface issue with Club Log, FT8 QSOs are appearing under the "DATA" mode, even though they were recorded as FT8 on the station's side. The team is uploading the log regularly and overwriting the previous logs to ensure everything is accurate.
    • Live Streaming Link: You can follow the live log and see their streaming status via the official 9L5A livestream link.
  • Antenna Setup and Operations (Nov 29, 2024):

    • Location: The team's operating location is open to Europe, North America, and South America, making it ideal for working these regions. However, due to high tides each evening, antenna placement had to be carefully considered to avoid interference from rising waters.
    • Power Supply: The stations are powered by a 10.5 kVA diesel generator, fed by two 4mm² cables, ensuring stable operations even during extended transmissions.
    • Antenna Installation: The final antennas were installed, and the team has shared images of the setup process on their official website.

Additional Information

  • QTH Details: The team is operating from a prime location with excellent propagation paths to many parts of the world. Despite the challenges with tides, the setup is designed to make the most of the available space.
  • Website and Photos: The team continues to update their official 9L5A website with pictures and more details about their progress and installations.

Stay tuned for more updates and continue to check the team's live log for the latest QSO entries!
