S9Z – São Tomé & Príncipe DXpedition: Updates and Insights

Operator: S9Z Team
Location: São Tomé and Príncipe
Dates: November 10-20, 2024
Bands and Modes: 18m FT8, 20m CW, and more

Arrival and Initial Operations

The S9Z team arrived in São Tomé on November 9, 2024, and started assembling antennas the next morning. By 1500 UTC, they were QRV on 18m FT8, followed shortly by 20m CW. The team is excited to provide DXers worldwide with the opportunity to log São Tomé, particularly through FT8 and CW modes.

FT8: Expanding DX Opportunities

With the rising popularity of FT8, the S9Z team aims to make contacts more accessible for DXers with limited setups, low power, or minimal antenna configurations. FT8’s operational features, including the latest version of Super Fox, allow for better decoding capabilities, giving even modest stations a chance to work rare DX.

The team has requested that DXers who already have São Tomé in their log kindly hold off during the first two days, allowing those needing S9 as an ATNO (All-Time New One) to get through.

Team Preparations

Prior to arrival, the team met in Lisbon for final preparations, loading up equipment and holding a team meeting to ensure smooth, coordinated operations. This included in-depth discussions to align strategies, antenna setups, and contingency plans to provide a seamless DX experience for their global audience.

What to Expect Next

The team will continue on various bands and modes, adapting to propagation and conditions. Their setup includes a range of antennas suited for each band, providing flexibility for CW and FT8 enthusiasts alike. Additional details, real-time updates, and media can be found on the S9Z website and DX-World’s platforms.

We look forward to sharing the journey and connecting with as many of you as possible! Good luck to all operators, and happy DXing!
