In the heart of Western New York, the Fort Herkimer Amateur Radio Association (FHARA) stands as a beacon for amateur radio enthusiasts, providing both education and a strong sense of community. With the call sign W2FHA, FHARA is a recognized ARRL Special Service Club, celebrated for its contributions to amateur radio through public service, emergency preparedness, and educational initiatives.
Community and Education: A Dual Mission
FHARA is committed to serving the local Herkimer community and fostering interest in amateur radio. The club actively offers training and mentorship programs for those interested in obtaining or advancing their licenses, including Technician and General Class License courses. Monthly license test sessions are held for aspiring radio operators, making the club accessible to new members and ensuring they have the resources to succeed in amateur radio.
With a focus on youth engagement, FHARA encourages young people to explore the world of radio technology, sparking an interest that could lead to a lifelong hobby or career.
Specializations and Services
The club holds monthly meetings on the second Wednesday at 7 PM at the Herkimer County 911 Center, where members discuss topics ranging from contest operation to digital modes, VHF/UHF, and public service communications. The club supports a variety of services, including:
- A regular Club Newsletter
- Entry-Level License Classes and General or Higher License Classes
- A Mentorship Program for new members
- A fully functional Repeater system
- A Tvi/RFI Committee to address interference issues
The FHARA’s commitment to service extends beyond education. As an organization deeply involved in public service and emergency communications, the club plays a vital role in community preparedness, equipping members with the skills to provide reliable communications during local emergencies.
Leadership and Membership
Under the leadership of Christopher L. Bouck, KB4CMF—who serves as the club’s contact, treasurer, and editor—FHARA thrives as a well-organized and responsive club. Donald B. Peterson, KD2ILO heads the club as president, with Larry G. Martinson, KD2RCU as secretary, and Frank Lindsell, N2VAM as vice president.
