This December, the S21DX team is gearing up for an exciting and ambitious IOTA DXpedition to Dal Char Island (AS-140), a remote island in the Bay of Bengal, off the coast of Bangladesh. Scheduled for December 13-19, 2024, the team is focused not only on making contacts across the globe but also on training a new generation of young HAM radio operators. This DXpedition promises to be an enriching experience, combining technical expertise with hands-on training for local enthusiasts.
Building the Foundation for a Successful Operation
In preparation for this IOTA (Islands on the Air) adventure, the team has been busy with essential tasks, including assembling antennas, testing equipment, and ensuring the proper setup for a 5KW generator that will power the operation. As of November 18, team members had completed an 18m mast check and finalized preparations for 17m and 12m VDA (Voltage-Dependent Amplifier) elements. They’ve also added more radials for their 160m antenna to ensure optimal low-band performance. A few images from S21YLJ (a key team member) showcase the group's hands-on efforts in creating these vital components, further strengthening the operational readiness for their December deployment.
The team’s commitment to quality equipment and detailed planning is evident in their careful preparation of antennas, radios, and other tools, ensuring that they are ready to handle both the challenging conditions of the island and the anticipated pileups during their operation.
Training the Next Generation of DXers
One of the standout features of this 2024 S21DX DXpedition is the emphasis on youth involvement. The team has made a concerted effort to engage young operators who will gain invaluable experience working with advanced HF antenna systems, learning propagation patterns, and mastering the art of pileup handling. This training is key to fostering the next generation of HAM radio operators in Bangladesh, providing them with the technical knowledge and hands-on experience that will empower them in future DX activities.
Among the team members, YL Raka (callsign S21YLJ) will be returning for her third activation with the S21DX team, after volunteering in both the 2021 and 2022 expeditions. This year, she will be one of the lead operators, helping guide the young participants as they embark on their first DX adventures. Her presence is a testament to the ongoing commitment to building a strong HAM community in the region.
Setting Up for a Memorable DXpedition
The S21DX team has already begun preparations with a series of test runs and equipment checks. In September 2024, team members S21MOB and S21FIA tested their K9AY receive loop antenna on 80m and performed successful QSOs with a 1/4 wave vertical antenna for transmission. This practical testing of equipment is crucial for identifying and rectifying any issues before the team heads to the island.
Logistics and Equipment: What to Expect
The team has also prepared the following gear for the operation:
- 5KW Generator for reliable power
- K9AY receive loop antenna for low-band reception
- VDA elements for 17m and 12m bands
- 160m inverted-L antenna
- Elecraft K-Line stations with amplifiers
With such a diverse array of antennas and equipment, the team is set to provide an exciting and successful DXpedition for all who tune in.
S21DX Goals: More Than Just QSOs
While making QSOs is always a primary goal for any DXpedition, the S21DX team’s focus on training and capacity building sets this operation apart. They hope to provide local HAMs with the skills and experience to operate effectively on HF bands, with an emphasis on the technical aspects of antenna building and propagation analysis, as well as the complex task of managing pileups.
The S21DX team believes that this will not only enhance the DXing culture in Bangladesh but also inspire a new generation of radio amateurs to pursue more international communications and continue to participate in IOTA activations in the future.
