How to Update Firmware on Your Talkpod A36Plus: A Guide for All Users

Hello,  friends!

Today, we will walk you through the complete process of upgrading the firmware on your Talkpod A36Plus MAX HAM Radio.

Firmware updates can improve radio performance, fix known issues, and add new features. Before starting, please make sure you are using the correct firmware version for your radio model.

⚠️ Before You Start

Please make sure:

  • Your radio battery is fully charged.
  • You are using the original or compatible K-Head programming cable.
  • The programming cable driver is installed correctly.
  • Do not disconnect the cable or power off the radio during the upgrade process.

An incorrect firmware file or interrupted update may cause upgrade failure.

Step 1: Connect Your Radio to the Computer

First, prepare a K-Head Programming Cable (USB Programming Cable) to connect your Talkpod A36Plus MAX to your computer.

Connect:

Radio → Programming Cable → Computer USB Port

After connecting the radio, turn on your computer and prepare the upgrade software.

How to Check the COM Port Number

If the software cannot detect your radio, you may need to check the USB serial port number.

Windows 10 / Windows 11:

  1. Click Start
  2. Open Settings
  3. Select Bluetooth & devices
  4. Open Device Manager
  5. Expand Ports (COM & LPT)

You should see your programming cable listed with a COM number, for example:

USB-SERIAL CH340 (COM3)

Remember this COM number because it will be needed during the upgrade process.

If No COM Port Appears

If you cannot find a COM port:

  • Check whether the programming cable is properly connected.
  • Try another USB port.
  • Reinstall the USB serial driver according to your cable chipset.
  • Restart your computer after installing the driver.

Step 2: Upgrade Firmware Using Talkpod Bootloader

Now open the Talkpod Bootloader software.

Follow these steps:

  1. Click the "..." button.
  2. Select the latest firmware package.
  3. Open the .kdhx firmware file.
  4. Select the correct COM port.
  5. Click "Automatic Upgrade".

The upgrade process will begin automatically.

When you see:

"Download Finished"

your firmware upgrade has been completed successfully.

Congratulations!

About Voice Pack and End Beep Function

Depending on your original firmware version, some functions may require an additional voice pack update.

Firmware versions before V1.12:

The end beep function may not be available by default.

If you need this function, you can import the latest voice pack using:

Talkpod Voice.exe

Firmware versions after V1.14:

The additional voice pack update may not be required.

Step 3: Import Voice Pack (Optional)

If you need to update the voice pack:

  1. Open Talkpod Bootloader.
  2. Select the correct COM port.
  3. Click "Load Voice".
  4. Select the latest voice pack file.
  5. Click "Import".

When you see:

"Completed"

the voice pack update is finished.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1: The software shows "Handshake Failed". What should I do?

Please check:

  • Is the correct COM port selected?
  • Is the radio powered on?
  • Is the programming cable connected properly?

Try reconnecting the cable and restarting the software.

Q2: The progress bar stops before reaching 100%.

Please check:

  • Make sure the battery level is sufficient.
  • Keep the programming cable connected firmly.
  • Avoid moving or disconnecting the radio during the update.

Q3: Why doesn't the end beep work after upgrading?

Please check:

  • Make sure the tail beep function is enabled.
  • Confirm that your firmware version supports this feature.
  • Import the latest voice pack if required.

Q4: How do I enter firmware upgrade mode?

Normally, the A36Plus MAX will automatically enter upgrade mode after connecting:

Radio + Programming Cable + Bootloader Software

No additional button combinations are required.

Q5: Do I need to press all three side buttons while powering on?

No.

For normal firmware updates, pressing all three side buttons is not required.

Only use special recovery procedures if the radio cannot boot normally.

Q6: Will the LED light up during firmware upgrade?

No.

The LED indicator does not turn on during the normal firmware flashing process.

Q7: Should I choose "Manual Update" or "Automatic Update"?

Select:

Automatic Update

This is the recommended upgrade method for most users.

Q8: When can I disconnect the radio?

After the software shows that the firmware update is complete:

  1. Close the upgrade software.
  2. Disconnect the programming cable.
  3. Restart your radio.
  4. Check the new firmware version.

Your Talkpod A36Plus MAX is now ready to use!

Good afternoon:
I have an A36Plus with firmware 1.17. I can program it with a cable both with Chirp and with the own program. It doesn’t give me problems.
On the other hand, it is impossible for me to change the firmware to higher versions. I have tested with firmware INT v1.18. it does not work. With GMRS firmware. It does not work. A counter to 5 in Chinese appears on the screen.
It does not give me indications of the error but the firmware is not changed.
I have tried both versions of the
A36plus Bootloader.
How do I proceed to update it?
Thank you so much

On my A36 Plus I found two versions of Bootloader. I was trying to use A36PBootloaderEn which the Firmware updates was not working. Went back and downloaded TalkpodBootloader which worked and installed v1.20! Be careful which version you download.

My A36+ is on v1.18 and will not allow me to upgrade. The connection is working because I can use the programming software and in the bootloader program I am selecting the correct com port. The display only flashes when trying to upgrade.
