Northeast Oklahoma Radio Amateurs (NORA): Bridging Communication and Community

Located in the scenic region of Northeast Oklahoma, the Northeast Oklahoma Radio Amateurs (NORA) club stands as a dedicated hub for amateur radio operators, offering a blend of technical expertise, public service, and community engagement. With a rich history rooted in amateur radio's core values of communication and public service, NORA has become a valuable resource for both seasoned operators and those looking to start their journey in the hobby.

A Community-Focused Club with a Purpose

The Northeast Oklahoma Radio Amateurs (NORA) is a community-driven group of 19 members who come together to promote the spirit of amateur radio. The club operates under the call sign NO5RA and was officially affiliated with the ARRL (American Radio Relay League) on April 19, 2017. The primary mission of NORA is to foster interest in amateur radio, provide educational opportunities, and assist in public service through effective communication.

With a dedicated team of volunteers, the club supports a variety of local and regional communications efforts. Among the club's core activities are public service and emergency communications, repeater operations, and hosting license test sessions for individuals interested in becoming licensed amateur radio operators.

Regular Meetings and Collaborative Learning

NORA members meet every Saturday at 12:00 PM at the Nazarene Church located at 350 South Scraper Street. These meetings serve as a forum for learning, idea sharing, and project collaboration. Whether you are interested in improving your operating skills or learning more about the latest radio technologies, the club provides an inclusive environment where knowledge is freely shared.

For newcomers to amateur radio, the license test sessions offered by NORA provide an excellent opportunity to obtain an entry-level license or upgrade an existing one. The club’s educational efforts ensure that all members have access to the resources and support they need to thrive in the world of amateur radio.

Commitment to Public Service

Beyond the technical and educational aspects of amateur radio, NORA is deeply committed to serving the Northeast Oklahoma community. Members regularly volunteer in public service communications, providing critical support during emergencies and disaster situations. In times of need, the club’s members step in to offer reliable communication, assisting with local efforts like the SKYWARN storm spotting network and other community outreach initiatives.

As part of their mission to enhance community preparedness, NORA also educates the public on the importance of amateur radio during emergencies, ensuring that more people understand how amateur radio can be a lifeline when traditional communication networks fail.

Leadership and Club Growth

NORA’s leadership is composed of a passionate group of volunteers dedicated to the success and growth of the club. President John W. Schlosser (W5GFI) leads the charge, overseeing club activities and steering the direction of NORA’s initiatives. Vice President Gary D. Hunt (KB5TWP) contributes to the leadership by handling the club’s communications and also serving as the club’s editor. Secretary David M. Stevens (W5DMS) ensures that all administrative duties are carried out efficiently, maintaining contact with members and managing the club’s documentation.
