Madison County Amateur Radio Club: Connecting Madison and Beyond

In a world saturated with fast-paced digital communication, the Madison County Amateur Radio Club (MCARC) brings an enduring and timeless passion for connection and community. With the call sign KE8RV, this vibrant club is a hub for amateur radio enthusiasts in Madison County, Ohio, dedicated to spreading knowledge, camaraderie, and public service.

A Foundation of Connection

Since its affiliation with the American Radio Relay League (ARRL) in 1981, MCARC has cultivated a legacy of learning, service, and exploration in amateur radio. Monthly meetings, held every second Wednesday at 7:00 PM at the Madison County Engineer’s Office in London, Ohio, are more than just technical gatherings—they are community events, welcoming everyone from seasoned operators to curious newcomers.

The KE8RV Memorial Repeater

At the heart of the club's technical capabilities is the KE8RV Memorial Repeater on 147.285 MHz, an open resource for amateur radio operators. This repeater, located in London, Ohio, is bolstered by three remote receive sites across Madison County, ensuring wide-area coverage. MCARC has also embraced modern technology, offering Echolink® access (KE8RV-R, Node 989602) for seamless connectivity to the global amateur radio network.

A Club with a Mission

MCARC thrives on its mission: promoting the knowledge, enjoyment, and benefits of amateur radio. With 60 licensed members out of a total membership of 66, the club balances technical expertise with a welcoming, inclusive spirit. From contest participation to public service initiatives, MCARC is a linchpin in Madison County’s emergency communication efforts, standing ready to assist whenever needed.

Programs and Opportunities

The club is more than a meeting place; it is an incubator for skill development and lifelong learning. Programs include:

  • License Test Sessions to help aspiring operators earn their amateur radio licenses.
  • Mentorship Programs to guide members in honing their radio operation skills.
  • Technical Committees, like the Tvi/RFI committee, tackling signal interference issues.

Leadership at the Helm

Under the leadership of President Tony W. Pugh (NO8F) and a dedicated team of officers, including Vice President Herman R. Thornton (W8RAY), Treasurer Terri Kovalchik (N8TLK), and Secretary Bonnie S. Krist (N8BEK), MCARC continues to grow as a beacon of technical expertise and community spirit.
