Lockport Amateur Radio Association: A Legacy of Connection and Community Service

The Lockport Amateur Radio Association (LARA), represented by call sign W2RUI, stands as a beacon of amateur radio in Niagara County. Established in 1949 by Floyd Ziehl of the former Ziehl Electronics, this club operates the oldest 2-meter repeater station in the county. Today, LARA continues its legacy of supporting radio enthusiasts in Lockport and surrounding areas.

LARA meets on the last Saturday of select months, from September to May, at their dedicated clubhouse on Cambria-Wilson Road. Members engage in various aspects of amateur radio, from contests and DX to public service and VHF/UHF communications. Additionally, LARA offers license classes, hosts a hamfest, and provides mentorship for new operators, encouraging all levels of radio enthusiasts to grow and connect.

President Michael A. Schlee (KB2TRU), alongside a dedicated team including Vice President Geoff M. Baumgartner (KC2ZWW) and Secretary Hector R. Carveth (KB2VWD), leads the club with a commitment to maintaining its storied repeater system and fostering a collaborative environment. LARA’s club newsletter, managed by Editor Steven Ortner (KD2GBD), keeps members updated on the latest events, activities, and opportunities for involvement.
