Lake County Amateur Radio Association: Connecting Communities through Innovation

In the heart of Lake County, Ohio, the Lake County Amateur Radio Association (LCARA) thrives as a beacon for amateur radio enthusiasts. Operating under the call sign N8BC, LCARA is more than just a club—it’s a community-driven force dedicated to education, innovation, and public service.

A Rich History and Robust Presence

Founded in 1978, LCARA has spent decades championing amateur radio as a vital means of communication. Meeting monthly at the Lake County Historical Society, the club offers a space where technology, tradition, and teamwork converge.

Excellence in Service

LCARA’s contributions go beyond the airwaves:

  • VE Testing: Hosting six sessions annually to empower new and aspiring operators.
  • Public Service Events: Supporting local communities with communication infrastructure during critical events.
  • Emergency Operations: Maintaining a fully equipped station at the local Emergency Operations Center (EOC) to provide reliable support when it’s needed most.
  • Ongoing Education: Offering training programs to ensure members remain at the cutting edge of amateur radio technology.

Leadership and Community

Under the leadership of Edward Kopcak (KB8BKE), who serves as President, Treasurer, and Editor, LCARA is a testament to the passion and dedication of its members. Vice President Joseph P. Koskovics (N8JKO) and Secretary Thomas R. Revolinsky (KE8HJL) contribute their expertise to ensure the club’s seamless operation.

Embracing Innovation and Tradition

From participating in ARRL Field Day and NVIS Antenna Day to organizing on-the-air contests and digital mode operations, LCARA bridges the gap between cutting-edge technology and the timeless values of amateur radio. Its repeaters and bulletins keep members connected, while its outreach programs inspire public interest in the hobby.

LCARA welcomes all who are passionate about amateur radio, whether seasoned operators or newcomers eager to learn. With 60 active members, including 50 ARRL members, the club remains a pillar of Lake County’s communication landscape.
