Jake McClain Driver Memorial Amateur Radio Club: A Legacy of Passion and Purpose

Nestled in the heart of Houston, Texas, the Jake McClain Driver Memorial Amateur Radio Club (KC5WXA) carries a profound purpose: to honor the memory of Jake McClain Driver and promote the art of amateur radio. This club, founded on February 1, 2010, by a community deeply moved by Jake’s love for the hobby, ensures his spirit resonates with every QSO and DX contest.

Jake’s Legacy

Jake, licensed as a Technician Class operator at just 13, exemplified boundless enthusiasm for amateur radio. His journey, marked by meticulous logging, homemade transceivers, and lively QSOs on the 146.92 repeater in Houston, ended too soon in 2009 at age 26. Yet, his legacy thrives through the club that bears his name and the memories of those who shared the airwaves with him.

A Purpose-Driven Mission

The club’s mission transcends technical expertise. It fosters new amateur operators, offering one-on-one mentoring to guide them from aspiration to certification. From participating in ARRL and CQ HF DX contests to sponsoring the KC5WXA ARRL Annual Scholarship for high school seniors, the club is dedicated to education, outreach, and the joy of amateur radio.

Key initiatives include:

  • Scholarship Program: A $1,000 annual scholarship to encourage young hams to pursue higher education.
  • DXpedition Support: Contributions exceeding $5,000 to DXpeditions, furthering global amateur radio engagement.

A Vibrant Community

The club’s members, spanning Texas, Tennessee, Louisiana, and Ohio, unite around their shared passion for DXing, public outreach, and camaraderie. Meetings on the first Friday of each month at 6 PM provide a space for dialogue, skill-sharing, and celebration of accomplishments, hosted at 7010 Lawler Ridge in Houston.

Leadership and Vision

Guided by:

  • Deborah A. Driver (KD5EFM) - President
  • Mickey A. Driver (AK5Q) - Treasurer
  • James C. Boyles (KF5IWJ) - Vice President

The club remains steadfast in its mission to inspire and elevate the amateur radio community.
