At Talkpod LTD., we believe the future of ham radio lies in inspiring and supporting the next generation of operators. Recently, we were delighted to receive a story from our friends at the SSIERRA Nevada Radio Society (SNARS) that perfectly reflects the spirit of the amateur radio community.
During a recent amateur radio licensing exam session, the SNARS volunteer team successfully helped eight candidates pass their exams, earning either a Technician License or upgrading their existing amateur radio licenses.
One of the most inspiring moments from the session involved a 12-year-old candidate who had been studying hard for his Technician Class license. After passing the exam, he was both relieved and excited. The celebration became even more memorable when Doug (W7DBE) and Krystal Nelson (N6KDN) presented him with a Talkpod radio that had been specially programmed for him.
Even more inspiring was the young operator’s next plan: he hopes to teach his family about amateur radio so they can earn their own ham radio licenses. Stories like this remind us how powerful youth engagement in ham radio can be—bringing technology, learning, and family together.
Volunteers Strengthening the Amateur Radio Community
Behind every successful ham radio licensing exam is a dedicated team of volunteers. The SNARS team shared that transitioning from traditional paper exams to digital testing on devices has been a learning experience, but one that is proving to be more efficient for both examiners and candidates.
This successful session was made possible thanks to the support and generosity of several community members:
-
SNARS, for donating refurbished Chromebooks used during the exam session
-
Bob (KA6NSN), who supports the technical side of the testing system
-
Jim (W6US), who kindly loaned reading glasses to a candidate who had forgotten his, ensuring he could complete his exam
These acts of kindness and cooperation highlight what makes the amateur radio community so special—people helping each other succeed.
Why Youth Ham Radio Matters
At Talkpod, we are passionate about supporting initiatives that encourage young people to discover amateur radio. Receiving a first radio after passing a licensing exam is often the start of a lifelong journey in communication technology, experimentation, and community engagement.
When a young operator earns their Technician License, they gain access to a global community of radio operators who share knowledge, curiosity, and a spirit of public service.
Moments like this reinforce why we continue to support ham radio clubs, youth programs, and licensing activities around the world.
Thank You to the SNARS Team
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Krystal Nelson and the entire SNARS team for sharing this wonderful story with us and for their dedication to mentoring new operators.
Every new ham radio operator represents another step forward for the global amateur radio community. We are proud to see Talkpod equipment helping new licensees begin their journey on the air.
Talkpod looks forward to continuing to support ham radio education, youth amateur radio programs, and community-driven radio events in the years ahead.
