About the Club

The Hoodview Amateur Radio Club (HARC), with the call sign WB7QIW, is a dynamic and engaged amateur radio community serving the Portland Metro area. Established in 1978, HARC offers a variety of activities, services, and opportunities to its members. The club is proud to be an ARRL Special Service Club, signifying its commitment to service, education, and community outreach.


Meetings & Location

HARC hosts monthly meetings on the third Thursday at 7:30 PM. These meetings are held either virtually or in person—please check the HARC website for details on how to attend.


Club Services & Activities

HARC offers a wide range of services and activities for amateur radio enthusiasts of all levels:

  • New Ham Development and Training: The club offers classes for all levels of amateur radio licenses, including Technician, General, and Extra. New hams who successfully pass their exams receive a one-year membership to the club.
  • Public Relations: HARC is involved in public outreach and provides volunteer radio communicators and logistical support for local events in the Portland Metro area.
  • Emergency Communications: Many members of HARC are active in Multnomah County ARES, with members holding certifications from FEMA and ARRL, including ARRL ARECC Level 1 & 2. The club also conducts monthly Simplex nets to ensure members are prepared for emergency communication scenarios.
  • Technical Advancement: HARC sponsors and maintains 2 Meter and 70 cm repeaters. They also host workshops on topics like Digital Mobile Radio (DMR), hotspots, and microwave systems (pre-COVID), and offer webinars on advanced amateur radio technologies.
  • Operating Activities: The club operates a weekly net, participates in public communication events, and holds regular FEMA Region 10 HF communications exercises. The club also participates in ARRL Field Day every year.
  • Miscellaneous Activities: HARC supports the Mount Hood Medical Center with trained disaster communicators and provides radio communication support for the City of Gresham’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC).
