Since its inception in September 2016, the Garden School Amateur Radio Club (GSARC), call sign K2GSG, has been an exciting hub for students exploring STEM through amateur radio. With its location in Jackson Heights, Queens, one of the world’s most diverse neighborhoods, GSARC brings together students from various backgrounds to experience the power of global connectivity. This ARRL-affiliated club provides hands-on learning in digital modes, contesting, and public service, with members ranging from 4th to 12th grade.
Meeting every Thursday at 3:30 p.m. during the school year, students gather in Room 30 of Garden School to build skills in amateur radio, including entry-level and advanced license classes, on-the-air bulletins, and license test sessions. Led by club president and editor John Hale (KD2LPM) alongside a committed leadership team, the club fosters a nurturing and academically enriching environment, aligning with Garden School’s mission to blend traditional values with progressive pedagogy.
Established in 1923, Garden School emphasizes a curriculum in the context of small class sizes, close relationships among students, families, and educators, and a commitment to personal growth. This philosophy of individualized, holistic education complements GSARC’s initiatives, where students learn to operate transceivers, communicate across distances, and engage with a broader amateur radio community through events like Maker Faire and Field Day.
Today, GSARC continues to inspire young minds with the wonders of amateur radio, serving as both an educational platform and a community bridge. For more information, visit the Garden School Amateur Radio Club website.
