Cockenzie & Port Seton Amateur Radio Club: A Beacon for Amateur Radio Enthusiasts

Nestled in the heart of Cockenzie, East Lothian, the Cockenzie & Port Seton Amateur Radio Club (CPSARC) is more than just a local club—it's a hub of camaraderie, innovation, and community spirit. Since its inception in 1984 by Bob Glasgow GM4UYZ, the club has grown from strength to strength, uniting amateur radio enthusiasts not just from East Lothian but from far-flung regions such as the Borders, Dumfries, Strathclyde, Fife, and even Newcastle.

Meetings: Where Passion Meets Connection

CPSARC meets on the first Friday of every month (the second Friday in January) at the Thorntree Inn, located on the old Cockenzie High Street. From 7 PM until late, the lounge bar becomes a lively space where members gather to share stories, knowledge, and enthusiasm for amateur radio.

For hands-on activities such as construction nights, the club also makes use of the Cockenzie British Legion, providing members with a dedicated space to tinker, learn, and innovate.

A Club with Purpose

CPSARC is affiliated with the Radio Society of Great Britain (RSGB) and proudly operates under the callsigns MM0CPS and GM2T, which are frequently used during contests and special events. But this club is more than just its competitions; it's a close-knit community of individuals passionate about amateur radio and making a difference.

Club Highlights

  • Training and Newcomer Support: CPSARC welcomes newcomers to the hobby, offering training and guidance to help them obtain their amateur radio licenses.
  • Contest Participation: The club actively competes in contests, often achieving outstanding results.
  • Social Activities: Regular talks, video nights, and an annual Junk Sale foster a sense of community while providing entertainment and education.
  • Award-Winning Newsletter: The club's newsletter has won the Practical Wireless ‘Spotlight’ competition multiple times, showcasing the creativity and dedication of its members.

Giving Back to the Community

CPSARC's commitment extends beyond the world of amateur radio. The club actively supports the British Heart Foundation in memory of a beloved member who passed away from heart disease. Since 1994, the club has raised over £19,170.36 for this noble cause through event profits.

Additionally, CPSARC has benefited from funding through the National Lottery ‘Awards for All’ programme and BT’s Community Champions scheme, enabling the club to expand its initiatives and better serve its members.

A Club with a Winning Spirit

CPSARC’s informal and welcoming approach doesn’t stop its members from excelling. From winning contests to fostering innovation, the club has consistently punched above its weight. It serves as a beacon for anyone interested in amateur radio, whether they’re seasoned operators or curious newcomers looking to explore this fascinating hobby.
