Broadcast Employees Amateur Radio Society (BEARS): Strengthening the Network of Broadcast and Amateur Radio

The Broadcast Employees Amateur Radio Society (BEARS), operating under the call sign W2ABC, unites amateur radio enthusiasts from The Walt Disney Company, ABC, and ESPN, as well as non-employee associates. Based in New York City and affiliated since 1992, BEARS is a 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to public service and emergency readiness, providing a dues-free, collaborative environment for its 273 members.

BEARS operates an open repeater network, including the W2ABC/K2JRC/N2BEI/WA2DCI/N3ADV systems, serving the NY/NJ/CT/DC area. This network co-founded the Disney Amateur Radio Interconnect (DARI), linking to the Disney Emergency Amateur Radio Service (DEARS) and the Worldwide Amateur Radio Club (WARC). BEARS' partnerships extend to the Peconic Amateur Radio Club, Network Engineers Repeater Association, and the Minuteman Repeater Association, all part of DARI.

Supporting NYC Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) as a charter repeater partner, BEARS also provides Digital Mobile Radio (DMR) coverage through NY-METRO. Members contribute to various digital modes, public service, and VHF/UHF operations, making BEARS a valuable resource for professional and emergency communications across the broadcast community.
