Best Start-Up Spirit on the Dial: La Vega’s “Churroclub” Goes On Air

LA VEGA — In a world where new radio sections are rare and often bureaucratic, La Vega stands out—not for its size or legacy, but for its spirit. Founded in late 2022 by a group of friends bound more by churros and chocolate than cold solder joints, the section is proof that grassroots enthusiasm can still spark something real in Spanish amateur radio.

Born from Breakfast

The seed was sown on 144.525 MHz, where a group of enthusiasts from the Vega region would casually meet on-air. They soon discovered that they shared more than signal propagation quirks—they shared camaraderie. Dubbed “Churroclub en las ondas”, the group formalized its friendship into action: those who weren’t yet members of URE signed up, and together they launched a new comarcal (regional) section within the Union de Radioaficionados Españoles.

Approved officially on 29 September 2022, La Vega represents a bottom-up success in a landscape often dominated by aging memberships and fading repeaters.

Goals with a Global Accent

What makes La Vega notable is not only how it started, but how it thinks. The section’s bilingual online presence articulates a set of ambitious goals—from encouraging technical experimentation and DX camaraderie, to representing Spain before the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) and supporting projects in developing countries.

This isn’t just a casual club with churros: it’s a group that’s fluent in policy, cooperation, and purpose.

Not Just Talking

With a clean and accessible website, active Facebook page, and firm commitment to both local bonding and global outreach, La Vega punches above its wattage. There’s no megawatt contest station or rotating beam here—just the clear conviction that amateur radio still has new chapters to write, even in an era of YouTube, SDRs and smartphones.

In La Vega, the oldest of pastimes feels refreshingly new again.
