ARI L'Aquila: A Legacy of Amateur Radio in the Heart of Abruzzo

L'Aquila, Italy – The history of amateur radio in L'Aquila traces back to April 24, 1969, when the first A.R.I. (Associazione Radioamatori Italiani) group in the city was established. With a provisional headquarters at Via San Sisto 16, the nascent group began with 21 founding members. Among them were notable figures like Adriano Lagalla (I6BCQ), Antonio Cimoroni (I6CSK), Rodolfo Masi (I6MSO), and others who laid the groundwork for a vibrant radio community.

The first group leader elected was Rodolfo Masi (I6MSO), followed in 1972 by Antonio Cimoroni (I6CSK).

Pioneering Activities

Throughout the 1970s, 80s, and beyond, the group engaged in significant activities that left a lasting mark on Italian amateur radio:

  • "L'AQUILA D'ORO" (The Golden Eagle): They organized the first radio foxhunt in Central-Southern Italy, a testament to their innovative spirit.
  • "99" CITTÀ DELL'AQUILA Diploma: The group created and issued a special diploma, celebrating the "99 Cities of L'Aquila," fostering connections and recognition within the amateur radio community.
  • "CQ99" Bulletin: They published the first section bulletin, "CQ99," serving as a vital communication tool for members and showcasing their activities.

In 1972, the ordinary section membership fee was 2000 lire, with a reduced rate of 1000 lire for junior members, highlighting the group's commitment to accessibility and nurturing new talent.

A Meaningful Call Sign: IQ6VP

Today, the section operates under the call sign IQ6VP. This call sign holds a poignant dedication to Valentina Pasqualon, the daughter of current member Nillo Pasqualon, who sadly passed away at a tender age on March 11, 2003. This dedication serves as a continuous reminder of a cherished life and the community's bond.
