North Hills Amateur Radio Club (NHARC)

The North Hills Amateur Radio Club (NHARC), operating under the call sign W3EXW, has been a part of the Pittsburgh, PA amateur radio community since May 8, 1958. This club is dedicated to fostering communication and education in amateur radio, while engaging in a variety of activities for both novice and seasoned radio operators.


Club Mission and Activities

NHARC is actively involved in several areas of amateur radio, including:

  • Digital Modes: Exploring modern digital communication methods.
  • DX: Engaging in long-distance communication, particularly with international stations.
  • Public Service/Emergency: Supporting local and regional emergency communications efforts.
  • Repeaters and VHF/UHF: Operating repeaters and engaging in VHF/UHF radio communication.
  • General Interest: Promoting the broader interest in amateur radio through educational events and outreach.

Services Offered

  • Club Newsletter: Regular updates to keep members informed about the club's activities and events.
  • Entry-Level & General/Higher License Classes: Offering both entry-level and advanced classes to help members upgrade their licenses and gain new skills.
  • License Test Sessions: Hosting test sessions to help individuals obtain their amateur radio licenses.
  • Mentorship: Offering guidance and support to new and aspiring operators.
  • On-the-Air Bulletins: Broadcasting important information and updates to club members and the wider community.
  • Repeater: Operating a repeater for local communication.

Membership and Leadership

The club boasts a membership of 80 members, all of whom are voting members and licensed amateur radio operators. Of these members, 77 are also ARRL members. NHARC's leadership team includes:

  • Edward C. DeHart (WA3YOA) – President and Editor
  • Eric J. Fowler (WV3E) – Treasurer
  • Bill Hughes (K3RKC) – Secretary
  • Andrew T. Sobieralski (WA3BCM) – Vice President

Meeting Information

NHARC holds meetings on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of every month at 7:00 PM at La Roche University.
