WC6DX – San Nicolas Island, NA-066

WC6DX – San Nicolas Island, NA-066

Operator: Will, WC6DX
Dates of Operation: November 8–12, 2024
Grid Locator: DM03gg
Island: San Nicolas Island (NA-066), the most remote island in California (98 km from the mainland)

Will, WC6DX, recently activated San Nicolas Island (NA-066), one of the rarest California islands to be activated. Despite its relative commonality in terms of island classifications, San Nicolas is a sensitive US Naval facility, which makes it an uncommon DXpedition destination. The only documented operation from the island was by two California amateurs operating as WZ6SNI for Armed Forces Day in May 1971, over 50 years ago.

While NA-066 itself is more frequently activated, San Nicolas remains a unique and sought-after location due to its status and the challenges of access, including strict regulations and limited opportunities for activation. Will mentioned that weather permitting and assuming no flight cancellations, he was authorized for this rare activation.

He shared some photos of the trip on his QRZ bio, giving insight into the experience of operating from one of California's most remote locations.

For those who missed the event, it represents a rare chance to contact this otherwise difficult-to-access island. Keep an eye out for future opportunities to log WC6DX from San Nicolas Island.
