Since its founding in 2017, the Wayne Radio Amateur Emergency Team (WRAET) has established itself as a key player in Wayne Township, New Jersey, blending a passion for amateur radio with a strong commitment to public service and emergency preparedness. Operating under the call sign KD2KWT, WRAET supports the township’s Office of Emergency Management (OEM) and ARES/RACES programs, reinforcing the critical role of amateur radio in community resilience and emergency response.
WRAET’s monthly meetings, held on the second Friday at Wayne’s Municipal Building, foster a collaborative environment where both new and experienced radio enthusiasts come together to explore the diverse facets of amateur radio—from HF operations and MARS to DXing and Jamboree on the Air (JOTA). Under the leadership of President David J. Freeswick (KD2SGM), Vice President Joseph Scuralli (K2JVS), Treasurer George J. McCabe (KD2LZS), and Secretary and Editor Carver L. Washburn (W2TFM), WRAET offers its members mentorship, access to three local repeaters, and resources for skill-building in digital modes and VHF/UHF communications.
A highlight of WRAET’s yearly activities is its Hamfest, an event that draws the community together for a day of radio demonstrations, equipment sales, and camaraderie among radio enthusiasts. WRAET also hosts a monthly net, providing members with a platform to discuss current amateur radio topics, share insights, and stay informed about best practices in emergency radio operations.
With 16 dedicated members, including eight affiliated with the ARRL, WRAET is an organization that values outreach, education, and public service as much as the technical mastery of amateur radio. For those interested in joining a supportive and service-oriented radio club, WRAET provides the perfect mix of community engagement and technical pursuit.
