VERON Afdeling Assen (A67): Drenthe's Hub for Amateur Radio

Assen, Drenthe, Netherlands — Drenthe, known for its hunebeds and radio telescope, is also home to a significant number of Dutch radio amateurs. VERON Afdeling Assen (A67), founded in 1990 as a split from Afdeling A19, is the 67th VERON chapter and currently boasts over 70 members.

New Location for Chapter Meetings

After many years at "De Aanleg" in Deurze, the chapter has found a new home at Wijkcentrum "De Schulp," Buizerdstraat 10, 9404 BB Assen.

  • Meeting Schedule: Meetings are held on the first Thursday of every month, except for July and August.
  • Time: Doors open at 7:30 PM, and the meeting begins at 8:00 PM.
  • Activities: Each meeting aims to feature a guest speaker discussing various hobby-related or other interesting topics.
  • QSL Service: QSL manager Anton Landman PA3ANT is present at meetings for members to drop off and pick up QSL cards.
  • Welcome: Anyone interested in the fascinating world of amateur radio is warmly invited to attend.

Collaboration and Activities

VERON Afdeling Assen collaborates with VRZA Drenthe under the umbrella of Radio Combinatie Drenthe, fostering a broader amateur radio community in the region.

Activities at chapter evenings often include:

  • Experimentation
  • Self-building projects
  • QSL card service
  • Exchanging experiences
  • Operating the club station
  • Informal socializing and discussions about the hobby
  • Occasionally, "shack clear-out" items are offered (usually for free).
  • Some members are also active in the VERON Chapter Competition.

Training and Special Events

  • Club Station PI4ASN: The chapter operates club station PI4ASN for special occasions. To use this call sign, you can contact chairman PG4R.
  • Training: The chapter provides training for obtaining an amateur radio license, as well as CW (Morse code) courses for beginners or as a refresher.
  • Hands-on Experience: In cooperation with RCA (Radio Club Assen), newcomers can gain practical experience operating a radio under supervision on designated frequencies. Self-building activities are also carried out there.
  • Molendagen (Mill Days): In the second weekend of May, the chapter participates in Molendagen, where various windmills are open to the public, and radio amateurs make national and international contacts with other mills.
  • Field Days:
    • The first weekend of June sees UHF and VHF field days.
