VERON A07 Breda: Sustaining Amateur Radio Amidst Transitions

Breda, Netherlands — In the realm of amateur radio, where signals span continents and camaraderie transcends borders, the VERON A07 Breda chapter continues its vital work. As a local affiliate of the Dutch amateur radio society, this organization serves as a focal point for enthusiasts in the Breda region, fostering technical acumen and social cohesion. Yet, even in this vibrant community, the inexorable march of time makes its presence felt.

Recent months have seen the quiet departure of several esteemed members, a poignant reminder of the demographic shifts within the hobby. Kees Broeken, PA0KBT, passed away on January 23, 2025, at the age of 80. His demise followed that of Joop Schelen, PE1GQE, who became a Silent Key on December 7, 2024, at 92. And prior to them, Toon Machielsen, PA3DPC, departed on October 16, 2024. Such losses underscore the imperative for continuity and the transfer of knowledge to successive generations, a challenge many long-established associations now confront.

Despite these farewells, the club maintains a robust schedule of engagement. Its regular gatherings convene on the first Tuesday of each month at Café/Zaal De Dorpsherberg in Teteringen, commencing at 8:00 PM. These meetings offer a platform for members and prospective enthusiasts – the latter welcomed for introductory visits – to exchange insights and cultivate the shared passion for radio. Complementing these face-to-face interactions, a weekly radio round takes place every third Tuesday of the month at 7:30 PM via the 2-meter repeater PI2BRD (145.650 MHz), guided by a rotating leader from PI4BRD.

The agenda for 2025 reflects a commitment to both technical advancement and fraternal interaction:

  • January 7th initiated the year with a New Year's gathering and a demonstration of SWR/Power meters.
  • February 4th is earmarked for the annual general meeting, a session exclusively for A07 members.
  • A brief hiatus in March accommodates the Carnival festivities.
  • April 1st will feature discussions on VR proposals and a practical session on battery spot welding led by PA0JEN.
  • May 6th is dedicated to informal QSOs, facilitating direct communication among members.
  • June 3rd introduces a workshop on computer applications in amateur radio.
  • July 1st offers a deep dive into QO-100 satellite operations.
  • Following the customary August break, September 2nd will focus on homebrew projects.
  • October 7th provides a dedicated measurement evening.
  • November 4th will host an oscilloscope workshop.
  • The year concludes on December 2nd with a social bingo event.

The varied program highlights the club's dedication to both the technical and social dimensions of amateur radio. In an era increasingly defined by digital connectivity, organizations like VERON A07 Breda continue to serve as essential nodes, preserving traditional skills while embracing new technologies, ensuring the enduring relevance of this intricate and rewarding pursuit.
