GÜÍMAR, TENERIFE — Nestled between volcanic ridges and Atlantic breezes, the Valle de Güímar—comprising Güímar, Arafo, and Candelaria—has found its voice on the airwaves thanks to the Sección Comarcal del Valle de Güímar de URE, known simply as URVAG.
Though officially reconstituted in 2012 with an inaugural event at the Auditorio Juan Carlos I de Arafo, the section has quickly matured into a cornerstone of amateur radio in Tenerife. From its headquarters on Calle Poeta Arístides Hernández Mora, 6, the club orchestrates a mix of education, experimentation, and international engagement—with open doors each Friday evening for curious minds and seasoned operators alike.
Young Signals, Strong Roots
Under the leadership of Luis de la Rosa (EA8BMG), URVAG is more than a hobbyist club. It is a pedagogical platform, offering local youth the opportunity to engage in science and communication through antenna construction, signal propagation, and real-world DX contacts. This spirit of technical curiosity is baked into every initiative—from local contesting efforts to international QSO activations.
Experimental Spirit in a Traditional Framework
URVAG is unafraid to tinker. Members actively build antennas and modify equipment, keeping alive the experimental ethos that originally defined the hobby. And in a world increasingly defined by plug-and-play gadgets, URVAG serves as a reminder that knowledge is power, and soldering irons still matter.
The club also maintains a clear online presence, offering a window into its ongoing projects and educational mission.
A Community That Broadcasts More Than RF
Amateur radio may be its medium, but community is its true signal. Every Friday (barring holidays), the URVAG social HQ hums with dialogue, laughter, and learning—a modern canary in the coal mine for civil society in the digital age.
