The Union City Wireless Association (UCWA), located in Union City, Pennsylvania, has been a staple of the local amateur radio scene since its founding in 1969. Situated approximately 26 miles southeast of Erie, UCWA serves as a hub for radio enthusiasts and public service operators alike. With a focus on community involvement and emergency communication, UCWA plays an essential role in both the technical and civic aspects of amateur radio.
The club’s members come together every second Thursday of the month at the Union City Senior Center, where they discuss the latest developments in general interest topics, VHF/UHF communications, and public service opportunities. A key component of the club's operations is the maintenance and operation of the WA3UC Repeaters, providing reliable communication in times of need. The WA3UC repeaters are located on frequencies 146.70(-) and 441.90(+), both using PL tone 186.2, ensuring consistent connectivity for local operators.
As part of its dedication to public service, the UCWA supports several emergency communication efforts through RACES (Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service), ARES (Amateur Radio Emergency Service), and SKYWARN (weather spotter programs). This commitment ensures that the club remains at the forefront of local emergency response, providing backup communication when traditional systems fail.
In addition to its emergency services, UCWA hosts a Ragchew, Food, and Information Net every weekday at 7 PM on the WA3UC repeater. This informal gathering fosters camaraderie among club members while providing a platform for sharing information and discussing radio topics in a relaxed environment.
Under the leadership of President Roger A. Koebe N3UDQ and Contact David M. Wellman WX3E, the Union City Wireless Association continues to offer valuable services to the local community and beyond. Whether you're a seasoned operator or a newcomer looking for mentorship and fellowship, UCWA offers a welcoming environment for all.
