TO9W – Saint Martin DXpedition: Updates and Insights

The TO9W team is thrilled to announce the next exciting chapter of our DXpedition from the picturesque island of Saint Martin. Our operation began on November 25, 2023, and will continue until December 8, 2023, with the goal of maximizing QSOs across all bands and modes, especially prioritizing CW.

Planning and Preparation

Our team has meticulously prepared for this DXpedition, covering all aspects of radio, antenna, and computer setups. The rising noise levels due to local LED lighting are a challenge, even at our elevated location, but we’re equipped with a new multiband receiving antenna and a multi-coupler, ensuring all radios benefit from enhanced reception. Positioned approximately 200 feet from the main station, this setup minimizes interference and optimizes signal clarity.

The setup includes three operating stations for the four operators, with a dedicated fourth station on standby to monitor the 6-meter band for any openings. Equipment packing is well underway, and we’re ready to dive into operations as soon as we arrive.

Team Arrival and Setup Timeline

  • November 25: Operators Bob (W9AP) and John (K9EL) arrived late, jumping straight into the CQWW CW contest as time allowed.
  • November 28: Paul (K9NU) and Ed (N9EP) joined, with initial days dedicated to antenna installations for all bands. We expect to increase FT8 activity during this setup period.

Once installations are complete, we’ll prioritize 160, 80, and 40 meters—depending on sunspot activity, which may alter our band preferences.

Real-Time Logging and QSL Management

We’re excited to provide real-time log uploads using Club Log Live Stream, ensuring a smooth experience for operators tracking our activity. John, W9ILY, serves as our QSL Manager, uploading logs to LOTW daily. TO9W is backed by a dedicated pilot team of K9NB, W9MK, AA9A, N9AOL, and W9ILY, ensuring comprehensive support for any inquiries or assistance.

Contact and Communication

We’ll post real-time updates and photos on our TO9W Facebook page, capturing the spirit of the expedition as we go. For specific requests, QSO verifications, or questions, feel free to reach us at TO9W2023@gmail.com.

As the DXpedition concludes, all antennas—save one—will be taken down and stored for future operations. Our last active station will operate until about 1200 or 1300Z on December 9.
