The University of Chicago Amateur Radio Society (N9UC) is currently undergoing a period of rebuilding. While their equipment is temporarily in storage and meetings are on hold, this club with a rich history (affiliated since 1999) offers exciting possibilities for future ham radio enthusiasts at the University of Chicago.
A Look Back and a Look Forward
The N9UC has a strong foundation built on:
- Broad Range of Interests: Their focus on contesting, digital modes, DXing, VHF/UHF communication, and general interest suggests a welcoming environment for students with diverse ham radio aspirations.
- School or Youth Group Involvement: Their dedication to fostering the next generation of hams is commendable.
Current Status and Future Plans
While the ARRL listing shows limited information, the description offers some insights:
- Temporary Relocation: The club's station has been displaced from its building, with equipment in storage and VHF/UHF capabilities on loan to the Adler Planetarium.
- Restoration Efforts: A dedicated space has been secured for restoring the station, and some initial antenna installation has begun.
- Post-Pandemic Rejuvenation: Work on the station's restoration and club activities will resume once the pandemic allows. This includes potentially installing additional antennas and holding a meeting to reconnect with interested individuals.
