Teruel Speaks: A Rookie’s Revival and a Province on the Air

TERUEL, ARAGÓN — In Spain’s least populated provincial capital, a quiet renaissance in amateur radio is underway. At its heart is José Vicente Luján López (EA2CC)—a name recently etched into the CQ WW RTTY record books as the world rookie winner of 2022. Yet his story is less about trophies and more about tenacity.

José Vicente first touched radio waves at 14, navigating the CB bands before passing the Spanish EB exam at 16. Life, however, placed radio on pause. Nearly 30 years later, with a YAESU FTDX101D and an Acom 1000 amplifier, he’s not just back—he’s thriving.

A Local Signal with Global Reach

Operating out of Ronda Dámaso Torán 17, the URE Sección de Teruel may seem unassuming, but its ambitions are anything but. With contest activity under EA2CC, ED2B, and EE2E, the section blends tradition with performance. José’s approach—competing in phone, CW, and RTTY—is matched by a multi-band antenna setup capable of punching well above Teruel’s weight class.

His setup includes a HyEndFed MK2, Big Signal Delta Loop, and a Diamond D-3000, ensuring full-spectrum readiness. Digital modes are no afterthought: he is QRV on DMR BrandMeister TG21444, embracing modern connectivity with classic vigor.

A Province Not Forgotten

Long known for the slogan “Teruel existe”, this rugged region’s radio club now adds: “Teruel transmite”. The section’s social space offers not only a technical hub, but also a cultural anchor—connecting radio veterans and curious newcomers in one of Spain’s most radio-quiet yet spirit-rich regions.

In a world where many clubs struggle for continuity, Teruel’s story is one of return, resilience, and renewed frequency. José’s revival is emblematic of amateur radio itself: timeless, adaptable, and always ready for the next contact.
