The Skyview Radio Society (Call Sign: K3MJW) is a vibrant and active amateur radio club based in New Kensington, PA. Founded on May 4th, 1977, the club has grown into a central hub for amateur radio enthusiasts in the region, with a strong focus on public service, contesting, and a wide range of other activities.

Mission and Activities

The Skyview Radio Society offers a comprehensive and engaging array of activities for both beginners and experienced operators. The club's goals include:

  • Contesting: Participating in local and international contests, where members test their skills against other radio operators.
  • Digital Modes: Exploring the diverse world of digital communication within amateur radio.
  • Public Service/Emergency Communications: Supporting community events and emergency operations through reliable communication systems.
  • QRP (Low Power): Operating with low power setups, encouraging operators to explore minimalistic and energy-efficient radio techniques.

  • Elmer Night: A monthly mentoring session where experienced operators assist newcomers with learning and troubleshooting.
  • Swap N Shop: An annual event held every August for members and the public to buy, sell, or trade amateur radio equipment.

Club Meetings and Events

The club meets every Tuesday at the Skyview Clubhouse, located on Turkey Ridge Rd, near the intersection of 366/380. Meetings are structured as follows:

  • 1st Tuesday: Business meeting.
  • 2nd Tuesday: Interest group meetings on various topics.
  • 3rd Tuesday: Social night for relaxed discussions and camaraderie.
  • 4th Tuesday: Elmer night, dedicated to mentoring and helping new or less experienced members.

Meetings usually begin at 7:00 PM, and members are welcome to stop by at any time during the evening.

Club Facilities

Skyview boasts a well-equipped clubhouse with two acres of property, an antenna farm, and a radio room. These facilities enable members to engage in a variety of hands-on activities, from setting up antennas to operating a range of equipment in the club’s radio room.

Membership and Outreach

The club is composed of 115 members, all of whom are licensed amateur radio operators, with 100 members also being ARRL members. Skyview is recognized as an ARRL Special Service Club, and its members are always looking to grow their community of radio enthusiasts.
