In the heart of Northeast Ohio, where Medina, Summit, and Wayne counties meet, lies a hub of innovation and service: the Silvercreek Amateur Radio Association (SARA). Operating under the call sign W8WKY, this ARRL Special Service Club embodies the spirit of amateur radio by fostering technical growth, public service, and fellowship among its 148 members.
A Legacy of Service and Innovation
Established in 1977, SARA’s mission has remained steadfast: to empower amateur radio operators with technical expertise and to enhance the lives of the surrounding community. Recognized as an ARRL Special Service Club, SARA goes above and beyond by offering:

- Public Service Programs: Supporting critical initiatives such as ARES programs and NWS SKYWARN operations to aid during emergencies and severe weather events.
- Community Engagement: Hosting outreach programs and training sessions to spark interest in amateur radio.
A Wide Spectrum of Activities
SARA’s diverse membership is united by a shared passion for amateur radio. The club actively participates in:
- VHF/UHF Communications
- HF Communication
- Radiosport Contesting
- Digital Voice Technologies, including DMR
- Public Service Events
The club also maintains repeater operations, ensuring reliable communication for members and the broader community.
Strong Leadership, Stronger Community
Under the leadership of President Gary C. Shorter (AA8CS) and a dedicated team of officers, SARA thrives as a beacon of amateur radio excellence. The club’s meetings, held on the third Thursday of each month, provide a platform for collaboration, education, and camaraderie.
The club’s Editor and Contact, Jason D. McCormick (N8EI), ensures members stay informed through a well-curated newsletter, while Treasurer Jeffrey D. Royer (W8TB) and Secretary Jim M. Schaffter (KE8QWE) manage club operations with precision.
