Amidst the wooded charm of Haltern am See, a town better known for its tranquil reservoir and hiking trails than its electronic ambitions, a quiet transformation is underway. The local chapter of the Deutscher Amateur-Radio-Club—known as Ortsverband N42—is proving that the town’s proximity to nature is no impediment to global reach, at least not on the electromagnetic spectrum.

Founded in 1977, N42 now celebrates over four decades of amateur radio activity. But while tradition is respected, it is not worshipped. This is a club of tinkerers and educators, one that views each antenna not as an endpoint, but as a springboard.

The club’s weekly gatherings alternate between physical meetings at the youth center TRIGON and online sessions—an elegant nod to both the analog and digital natures of their craft. Yet the most impactful activities may not be the meetings themselves, but what occurs between them.

The Classroom as a Launchpad

At the Joseph-König-Gymnasium, the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Funk/Elektronik—a club co-run by physics teacher and licensed operator Volker Loose (DK2MT)—has emerged as a surprising force for STEM engagement. What began in 2010 with 30 students now serves as a long-term pipeline of young talent, introducing circuitry, soldering, and even satellite telemetry to the next generation.

Students engage in real-world communications, participate in peiling (radio direction finding), and even get to transmit their voices across the continent. During the Europatag der Schulstationen, students made real-time connections with fellow enthusiasts across Europe—an activity that, though technically modest, felt like wizardry to the uninitiated.

Building a Ground Station in a School Attic

Meanwhile, Haltern’s radio amateurs have managed something that would make even some universities envious: a fully operational ground station for the QO-100 satellite. Using an Adalm-Pluto SDR and linked to the roof via a data bridge—thanks to the technical ingenuity of Udo DL1UDO and cooperation with the DB0OHL Hamnet node—the system enables bidirectional communication through a geostationary satellite operated by AMSAT-DL.

The students’ excitement is matched by the club’s ambitions. This isn't about nostalgia for Morse code; it's about offering a working model of space-era radio. And with plans to open the setup to more educational users, the roof of a high school in Haltern may soon become one of the town’s most globally connected nodes.

From Town Squares to the Cosmos

But N42’s reach is not confined to the schoolhouse. During Haltern’s 725-year city jubilee, the club showcased its capabilities with outdoor demonstrations, drawing crowds curious about the strange, beeping devices that connected them to faraway voices. Partnering with other local chapters, including Gelsenkirchen and Lüdinghausen, they also introduced visitors to amateur radio direction finding (ARDF)—a kind of electronic treasure hunt through fields and parks.

The club has also visited institutions such as the IUZ at the Sternwarte Bochum—a place once pivotal in tracking Sputnik and now a node in the global satellite amateur community. A surprise live video transmission from the QO-100 satellite, showing Haltern’s club members on a monitor viewed across continents, drove home a message that radio, far from being obsolete, is as magical and consequential as ever.

A Pragmatic Philosophy

What makes N42 distinctive is its seamless weaving of the old and new. From Morse to SDR, from field antennas to Hamnet routers, the club is neither stuck in the past nor blindly rushing into the future. It tests, builds, mentors, and shares—quietly crafting a model of applied curiosity.

In a world where technology increasingly abstracts away its workings behind glossy screens, Haltern’s radio amateurs offer a subversive message: the signal is the tool, but knowledge is the power.
