Rockhampton's Radio Spirit: The Central Queensland Amateur Radio Association

Rockhampton, Queensland - Dedicated to fostering the spirit and practice of amateur radio within the community, the Central Queensland Amateur Radio Association (VK4CQR, VK4CHV) serves as a vibrant hub for enthusiasts in the Rockhampton region. With education and enjoyment as their cornerstones, the association welcomes both licensed operators and those simply curious about the exciting world of radio communication.

Starting with a modest group of eight members, CQARA has grown to encompass over 28 individuals, boasting a strong Wireless Institute of Australia (WIA) membership of over 60% and an impressive collective knowledge and experience base exceeding 250 years. Founded on the principle of evolving with the times and actively promoting amateur radio, CQARA aims to bring together radio enthusiasts to share their passion, engage in public events, and increase public awareness of the hobby.

Whether you hold an amateur radio license or are simply intrigued by the technology and its possibilities, CQARA encourages you to explore their website, ask questions, participate in meetings or group activities, and consider becoming a member.

The core objectives of the association are clearly defined:

  • To promote and advance the science and practice of radio communication, facilitating the exchange of information and ideas among members and the wider community.
  • To foster an environment that aligns with the Amateur Radio Operator's code of conduct.
  • To provide vital emergency communication support to statutory services, assisting the public during disruptions to normal communication channels.
  • To train, assist, and encourage individuals interested in amateur radio through programs and activities, enhancing the enjoyment and general interest in the hobby within the association and the community, including the facilitation of training and assessment.
  • To support lawful and responsible conduct among its members and the broader amateur radio community.

The Central Queensland Amateur Radio Association Inc. holds two meetings each month. Committee meetings take place approximately one week prior to the General Meeting. General Meetings are held once a month, typically in the second week, at the Frenchville Sports Club, commencing at 7:00 pm. Many members gather at around 6:00 pm for a pre-meeting meal, fostering a social atmosphere. All interested individuals are warmly invited to attend these meetings, which usually involve a brief business session followed by informative presentations by members on various amateur radio-related topics.

CQARA actively participates in public events, as demonstrated by their successful securing of the Seahill Lighthouse as the 200th entry for the International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend (ILLW) in August. Thanks to the efforts of Jason VK4FJGS and Ray VK4HOT, the association has secured their position at the lighthouse, with transportation and logistical details currently being organized. This initiative has generated significant interest among CQARA members.

The Central Queensland Amateur Radio Association holds its General Meetings every second Sunday of the month at the Frenchville Sports Club.
