Repost: KH7AL/KH9 – Wake Island, OC-053 DXpedition Update

After an intense and busy DXpedition on Wake Island, I’m now gearing up for my long-awaited break and want to share some final updates before I head home to spend time with my family.

A Record of QSOs:
Over the past two weeks, my non-stop operating—mostly on CW—has added over 1,400 QSOs to my log, recently pushing me past the 5,000 QSO milestone. I’ve been on the air every day since February 21, and it’s been an incredible experience meeting so many of you.

Upcoming Operating Schedule:
To maximize contacts before my departure, I’ve arranged a series of multi-day, evening local time sessions:

  • March 13: 30m “Thursday” session from 06:45 to 08:30
  • March 14: 15m SSB session from 07:00 to 09:00
  • March 15: 15m CW session from 07:00 to 09:00
  • March 16: 12m SSB session from 07:00 to 09:00, followed by a 15m SSB session starting at 19:30 until midnight
  • March 17: 12m CW session (a special nod to St. Patrick’s Day)

I’m hopeful these sessions will give me a last burst of DX contacts before I’m off the air.

On the Personal Front:
I’m also excited to welcome a new ham friend—a colleague who recently passed his Technician exam and is planning to upgrade to General. I’m looking forward to greeting him on 10m soon!

Reflections & Future Plans:
While the past weeks on Wake Island have been a whirlwind of early mornings, endless pileups, and technical experiments (from testing new 10m VDA antennas to building a new DX Commander vertical), I’ve learned a lot and grown as an operator. I’ll be taking a break soon, but expect to hear me on “CQ SOTA” from a Montana mountain in April.

Thank you all for your support and patience as I’ve juggled work and radio. Your QSOs and kind words have made this journey unforgettable.

73 and happy DXing!
