PEMA RACES (KK1PMA): A Lifeline for Emergency Communications

In the heart of Providence, Rhode Island, a dedicated team of amateur radio operators stands ready to provide vital communication support in times of crisis. Known as PEMA RACES (KK1PMA), this group serves as the volunteer amateur radio arm of the Providence Emergency Management Agency (PEMA).

A Vital Role in Emergency Preparedness

PEMA RACES is not just an organization; it is a lifeline during emergencies. Authorized under Part 97.407 of the FCC regulations, RACES (Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service) provides an essential communication framework during disasters when conventional channels may fail. This service ensures that messages critical to public safety and disaster response are transmitted efficiently.

Weekly Radio Nets

Every Sunday at 1900 hours, PEMA RACES conducts a structured amateur radio net on the 146.70 repeater:

  • Formal Net: Restricted to RACES members, focusing on emergency protocols and readiness.
  • Informal Net: Open to all licensed amateurs, offering an opportunity to engage with the community and practice skills.

This dual-net structure fosters preparedness while building connections among amateur radio enthusiasts.

Hands-On Learning and Community Building

PEMA RACES is more than an emergency service; it is a hub for education and camaraderie. The organization offers:

  • Entry-Level License Classes: Encouraging newcomers to join the amateur radio community.
  • License Test Sessions: Providing pathways for skill advancement.
  • Mentorship Programs: Connecting seasoned operators with those eager to learn.
  • Repeater Services: Enhancing communication capabilities across the region.

Monthly Meetings at PEMA Headquarters

The group gathers on the first Saturday of every month at 9 AM at PEMA Headquarters, 591 Charles St, Providence, RI. These meetings are a mix of training, discussion, and planning, keeping members engaged and prepared.

Field Day and Public Engagement

Field Day events highlight PEMA RACES’s commitment to training and outreach. From operating VHF tents to running "Get On The Air" (GOTA) stations, these events showcase the critical role of amateur radio in emergency management. Highlights include:

  • Hands-On Training: Providing real-world scenarios for members to hone their skills.
  • Community Involvement: Inviting the public to learn about amateur radio's role in disaster response.

Leadership and Dedication

Under the guidance of Barry S. Noel (W1BSN), PEMA RACES exemplifies leadership and commitment. With a membership of 13 licensed amateurs, including 8 ARRL members, this small but mighty team is making a significant impact.

Join the Effort

PEMA RACES invites all licensed amateurs and those interested in amateur radio to connect, learn, and contribute. Whether through Sunday nets, monthly meetings, or Field Day events, there is always a place for those passionate about communication and public service.

For more information, tune in to the 146.70 repeater or visit the PEMA RACES meeting at their Providence headquarters. Together, we can ensure that when all else fails, amateur radio is there to bridge the gap.
