At the heart of Rhode Island’s amateur radio community lies the Newport County Radio Club (NCRC), a vibrant and innovative organization that stands as the state’s largest amateur radio club. With a rich history dating back to its ARRL affiliation in 1949, the NCRC has cultivated a legacy of connection, education, and public service.
A Community for Every Ham
The NCRC offers a diverse range of activities tailored to hams at all levels of expertise. With a membership of 156 dedicated individuals, the club thrives on a growth-mindset ethos, encouraging both seasoned operators and newcomers to explore and expand their radio horizons.
Weekly and Monthly Engagements
The club meets on the second Monday of each month at 7 PM, with details available on their website. These meetings, complemented by daily 2m net operations on their W1SYE analog FM and W1AAD DSTAR repeaters, provide ample opportunities for mentorship and fellowship. The daily 2m net serves as a cornerstone for supporting new operators to Get On The Air (GOTA).
Pioneering Programs and Initiatives
NCRC members lead groundbreaking efforts in amateur radio, including:
- Parks on the Air (POTA): Building on a legacy that began with Islands On the Air, members now engage in thrilling outdoor radio adventures.
- Microwave Mesh Projects: Enabled by an ARRL Foundation Club grant, these projects exemplify the club’s innovative spirit.
- Earth-Moon-Earth (EME) DX Operations: Pushing the boundaries of long-distance communication.
- Scouting Collaboration: Through Jamboree On The Air (JOTA), the club mentors young Scouts, inspiring the next generation of radio enthusiasts.
Education and Licensing
The club hosts quarterly VE sessions open to the public and organizes remote classes for Technician, General, and Extra licenses in the spring and fall. These educational opportunities ensure a steady stream of well-prepared amateur radio operators entering the field.
Emergency Readiness
As a recognized ARRL Special Service Club, NCRC supports ARES, Skywarn, and local emergency preparedness initiatives. Through weekly drills and disaster response activities, the club maintains a state of readiness to serve its community.
Leadership and Collaboration
The club’s success is driven by a dedicated leadership team:

-
Vice President and Contact: Paul H. Fredette (K1YBE)
