Mount Juliet Simplex Society: A Unique Approach to Amateur Radio

In the bustling town of Mount Juliet, Tennessee, a unique and vibrant amateur radio club is reshaping the way hams connect and communicate. The Mount Juliet Simplex Society (MJSS), identified by its call sign KN4FKV, is unlike any other radio society in the United States. With a focus on simplex communication, the society offers hams a refreshing alternative to traditional repeater-based networks.

A Simplex-Centric Approach

Founded on July 28, 2017, MJSS specializes in fostering an understanding of simplex communication. This approach allows operators to evaluate their equipment and antenna setups in real-world conditions, free from the assistance of repeaters. Members participate in twice-weekly simplex nets on 146.415 FM every Wednesday and Saturday at 8:00 PM local time.

Additional simplex nets include:

  • Digital Modes: DMR, D-Star, and Yaesu C4FM
  • USB Modes: 2 Meter, 6 Meter, and 10 Meter USB
  • 223.415 FM: Twice weekly

The society’s ethos emphasizes flexibility and accessibility. No membership, dues, or meeting attendance is required—a testament to its welcoming and inclusive culture.

Where Community Meets Innovation

Meetings are held every second Saturday of the month at 8:00 AM at the Golden Corral in Hermitage, TN. These gatherings provide a platform for knowledge sharing, mentorship, and camaraderie. The society also maintains an active online presence through its website and Groups.io page.

Leadership with a Vision

Under the leadership of Paul E. Wieloszynski (K4PEW), who serves as the club’s president, contact, and editor, MJSS thrives on innovation and community spirit. Supporting him are:

  • Michael R. Marshall (KM4YRF) - Vice President
  • James W. Tewmey (KE4TWI) - Secretary

Their collective efforts have attracted an impressive 195 members, including 70 voting licensed operators and 30 ARRL members.

A Refreshingly Different Club Experience

MJSS takes pride in its distinction as the only club in the U.S. that allows hams to miss nets twice weekly. The humor underscores the club’s lighthearted and welcoming atmosphere, a hallmark of its appeal.

Join the Simplex Revolution

The Mount Juliet Simplex Society is more than just a club; it’s a movement that empowers amateur radio operators to explore the limits of simplex communication. Whether you’re a seasoned operator or new to the hobby, MJSS invites you to participate, learn, and connect in a supportive and innovative environment.
