Mid-Atlantic ARC: Connecting Communities Through Amateur Radio

Mid-Atlantic ARC: Connecting Communities Through Amateur Radio

Nestled in the heart of the western Philadelphia suburbs, the Mid-Atlantic Amateur Radio Club (MARC) has spent over four decades fostering connections and serving the community through the power of radio. Affectionately known by its call sign, WB3JOE, this ARRL Special Service Club continues to be a pillar of both local and regional amateur radio activity.

A Legacy of Service and Connectivity

Since its founding in 1982, MARC has grown into a dynamic and active club, with 85 licensed members who share a passion for the airwaves and a commitment to public service. Whether it's providing communications support for public events or offering a reliable means of communication during emergencies, MARC is a club that thrives on helping others. The club maintains six repeaters across three sites, ensuring clear, consistent communication for its members and the surrounding community.

At the core of MARC's mission is its annual Valley Forge Hamfest—a key event that attracts amateur radio enthusiasts from across the region. But MARC isn't just about the big events; it's about creating an ongoing, vibrant community.

A Hub for Learning and Growth

MARC also excels in its educational initiatives. The club offers license test sessions, ensuring that newcomers to amateur radio have the resources they need to succeed. But it doesn’t stop there—the club is committed to mentoring new operators, guiding them as they grow in the hobby, whether that means advancing their technical knowledge or honing their operating skills.

MARC’s regular nets, held on Wednesday and Sunday evenings, provide members with the chance to connect, share knowledge, and learn from each other. These nets, held on 147.060 and 145.130, are a vital part of the club’s regular rhythm.

Eyeball QSOs: Bringing the Community Together

While MARC embraces the technology that makes remote communication possible, the club never loses sight of the importance of in-person connection. Every last Saturday of the month, MARC members gather at Andy’s Diner in Conshohocken for an "Eyeball QSO" breakfast, where operators can enjoy good food and good conversation, face-to-face.

These regular meetups are a testament to the club’s commitment to building real-world relationships among its members—a place to foster friendships, share experiences, and discuss the latest trends in the world of amateur radio.

Innovation Meets Tradition

With its blend of traditional events like Field Day and the Pennsylvania QSO Party and its focus on technology and innovation, MARC continues to stay ahead of the curve in an ever-evolving field. Whether it’s on the airwaves or around the table at their monthly meetings, members of the Mid-Atlantic ARC are dedicated to keeping the spirit of amateur radio alive while adapting it to the challenges and opportunities of the modern world.
