RØDBYHAVN, LOLLAND – On the Danish island of Lolland, the local chapter of Eksperimenterende Danske Radioamatører (EDR), Denmark's national amateur radio society, operating under the callsign OZ1LOL, has just celebrated a significant landmark: its 50th anniversary. This milestone for the Rødbyhavn-based club was marked with a special celebratory gathering on Thursday, May 1, 2025. This event, which required prior registration for "smørrebrød" (open-faced sandwich) catering, also served as the club's final meeting before embarking on its traditional summer recess.
OZ1LOL distinguishes itself with a strikingly open-door and accessible policy. It warmly welcomes not only licensed radio amateurs but also any "andre teknikinteresserede" (other technically interested individuals) to participate in its activities. Notably, membership in the national EDR body or even possession of an amateur radio license is not a prerequisite for joining this local Lolland chapter. An annual fee of a mere 100 Danish kroner further lowers the barrier to entry, encouraging broad participation in discussions that typically cover antennas, filters, construction projects, general radio technology, and similar technical topics, usually enjoyed "over en kop kaffe" (over a cup of coffee).
The club ordinarily convenes its meetings at 7:00 PM on Wednesdays during even-numbered weeks. These gatherings take place at Digecentret (The Dike Centre), located at Skolegade 1, on the second floor, in Rødbyhavn. The recent 50th-anniversary celebration, however, took precedence over the club night that would have fallen on April 30th. For communication and inquiries, the club can be reached via its email address: mail@oz1lol.dk.
As OZ1LOL on Lolland embarks on its next half-century, its steadfast commitment to accessibility – requiring neither formal EDR affiliation nor a license for local participation, alongside a nominal annual fee – positions it as a uniquely welcoming hub. This inclusive approach has likely been a cornerstone of its longevity and ensures continued diverse engagement from all technically-minded individuals in the Rødbyhavn area, fostering a broad appreciation for the experimental and communal spirit of amateur radio.
